PVD & CVD partners who challenge each other

Walter was founded in 1919 and is now one of the world’s leading metalworking companies. As a provider of specialised machining solutions, Walter offers a wide range of precision tools for milling, turning, drilling and threading applications. Walter works together with its customers to develop customised machining component solutions for use in the aviation and aerospace industries, as well as automotive, energy, and general engineering. With around 3.300 employees worldwide, and numerous subsidiaries and sales partners, Walter serves customers in over 80 different countries.

Perfect partners

The collaboration between Walter and Hauzer goes back to 1991. Veit Schier, R&D Manager physical vapour deposition (PVD) at Walter, has been with the company for 25 years and has been working with Hauzer the whole time. “Originally, we developed our own coatings, and Hauzer provided the technological platform,” Veit says. “Walter and Hauzer complement each other really well. Walter is the partner for excellent standard tools, and in particular for customised applications that include special coatings. And Hauzer is the partner if you’re looking for very good custom solutions for
these special coatings.”

On the chemical vapour deposition (CVD) side of their business, Dirk Stiens, Walter Senior R&D engineer CVD coatings, is in no doubt about why Walter chose Bernex (also part of IHI Group) as their partner: “From the start, Bernex was the only real choice. And this is still the case. Bernex continues to come up with new ideas, new modules and new technologies. And this is precisely what we need to make new solutions and stay ahea
of the competition.”

Switching technologies

Both Veit and Dirk agree that the best part of the relationship is the flexibility offered by Bernex and Hauzer. Veit: “When Walter was switching between magnetron and arc, for example, Hauzer resolved any issues that arose and ensured that we were able to run the different processes successfully.”

“WE KEEP UPGRADING OUR HAUZER AND BERNEX SYSTEMS, AND STILL HAVE SOME ORIGINAL COMPONENTS.”

– Dirk Stiens

“Bernex continues to demonstrate their technical competence, especially in recent years,” Dirk adds. “They have a welldefined offering, but we particularly appreciate their ability to customise. The production of titanium aluminium nitride (TiAlN) CVD coatings requires specific equipment technology. We at Walter developed a novel TiAlN coating process in R&D, and Bernex delivered the necessary upgrade to our equipment.”

Faster innovation

“We’re always inventing and we’re in a new wave of innovation,” Dirk explains. “Developing new coatings can take several years. So, when we release a new coating platform, especially in inserts, we try to create product families.” Veit: “Better performance needs better coatings. HiPIMS is a great solution to produce smooth coatings, but we need the freedom to be able to choose between the PVD technologies.” Dirk: “For CVD, we’re using the outstanding titanium aluminium nitride coatings in our Tiger·tec Gold® grades, for even better performance and quality. Our customers are used to us setting the trends and coming up with the best solutions.”

Important sector

Walter is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of precision tools for metal machining, and understands the different coating requirements of various sectors. “For the aircraft industry, reliability is key,” explains Dirk. “But for other sectors, performance is the main focus. And the automotive industry is asking for more cost reduction. We need to have an answer for
every situation.”

The fact that Hauzer has a dedicated product manager for the tool sector is a reflection of the importance of the sector for the company, and how much Hauzer values partnerships such as the one with Walter.

“WE NEED CAPABILITY TO DELIVER PREMIUM TOOLS AT A COMPETITIVE PRICE AND WE BELIEVE BERNEX AND HAUZER ARE THE RIGHT PARTNER TO HELP US ACHIEVE THIS.”

– Veit Schier
